Simple lighting designs may require no more than an "on" or "off" switch or an occasional dimmer, but some jobs call for more sophistication. Several scenarios call for a recording and playback system:

• The status of a roomful of LEDs needs to change over time.
• Aleph LEDs will be mixed with other DMX512-compatible fixtures and devices.
• The goal is to create a memorable, subtle, or varied light show.
• The light show needs to happen on schedule automatically, without anyone "at the wheel."

Playback devices, as a rule, are not as flexible for real-time adjustments.as lighting consoles for a play or concert but they are much easier to operate, and they may be programmed to run unattended.
